Media Fact sheet 14 - Telling Stories: The Media's Use of Narrative

1) An example of a film that uses Todorov's narrative structure is "Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit." This is because it clearly shows how everything was peaceful, a problem occurs and then it is solved which are Todorov's three structures - equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.

2)

The series begins with the description of what their dynasty is and how it is important in the world. This clearly shows the importance of this family in society. The first character to be introduced to the series is a woman who states she is about to be handed this dynasty to her, which creates a reason for the audience to continue to watch, due to this enigma code. Her luxurious lifestyle is clearly shown and shows her social class from this, e.g: being on a private plane. This opening begins with disequilibrium as we are shown that there are cracks within the family.

3) Some examples of heroes using Propp's theory are: James Bond, Indiana Jones and Wonder Woman.

4) I think "She's the Man" is a good example of binary opposition, as it uses the idea of the girl 'chasing' the boy which is deemed unconventional.

5) An example used for dominant ideologies and values is where a policeman captures the criminal in order to enforce the ideology of the value of law and order.

6) Enigma codes offer gratification for the audience because the viewers are curious to see how the problem will be solved.

7) Episodic narrative - It has many parts but the narrative arc is solved in each episode and can be watched in any order.
Overarching narrative - Episodes usually end with a cliff hanger and contain summaries at the beginning, also they tend not to have a resolution.
Mixed narrative - A mixture of episodic and overarching, as the episodes should be watched in order but it uses longer arcs throughout the series, e.g: "Friends."
Multi strand overlapping narrative - Tells multiple stories at the same time and eventually conflict is resolved.

8) By creating a narrative and sending the audience a message that by buying the product it will bring them to the equilibrium it makes the more inclined to purchase the product.
