Genre blog tasks

Genre factsheets

Categorising texts

1) The example shows how just "sitting behind a desk" doesn't convey any meaning to the audience, however if you add other aspects with lighting and mise-en-scene you are able to send a clear message and create an image something the audience can associate with a genre.

2) The example describes how genres can be similar but the actual film/TV show could be completely different due to the genre. As stated in the factsheet both a sit-com and a soap opera could include a villain, but said villain could be illustrated in a multitude of ways and 'defeated' in different ways too.

3) A difference between character representations in action and disaster films are that usually an action hero is seen as a a "lone wolf," on the contrary a disaster hero is usually within a group who all work together.

4) Bordwell thinks that film can be categorised into these: period/country, director/star, technical process, style, series and audience.

5) Before watching/reading a form of media the audience uses their previous knowledge of the genre in order to gauge whether they will enjoy it or not. This also helps them when selecting what media they will choose to consume. With the use of this the audience could also reject the text as there are genres that some people just dislike. Once watching/reading a few forms of media the audience is also able to compare and usually will define the media by its genre.

6) Media producers like to try out new sit-coms as usually genres have loyal fanbases. This will in turn decrease the chance of failures in the future. They make sure their film trailers clearly show what genre the film is using many codes and conventions in it to attract fans of the genre. There are already set 'rules' when writing a new sit-com in a certain genre and use the examples to replicate what was popular and to not disappoint those who are a fan of the genre.

7) The example used is "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and it uses codes from a variety of genres such as: gothic horror, comedy, romance and soap opera.

Superheroes: a genre case study

1) The five films that are listed are: Avengers Assemble (2013), Superman, Spiderman, The X Men, Guardians of the Galaxy.

2) For example, Batman and Robin received a negative reception and needed to be deconstructed. Batman Begins was produced in 2005 and The Amazing Spiderman (2012) gave a whole new take to the batman character.

3) Schatz's theory shows how the deconstruction phase is crucial, otherwise when you come to produce a reinvention the genre may not be able to move past being a parody and may disappear entirely.

Genre analysis case study of the Netflix series Heartstopper

General

1) I have read all the books and watched the series so I thought it was a fitting show to use.

2) I have an interest in books and came across it and then saw people on social media posting about the Netflix series.

3) By reading the book before watching the series it meant I already had a view of the narrative and had expectations for the show.

4) I assumed this would be a teen rom-com and is based around LGBTQ+.

5) I enjoy romantic comedies and it is one of my 'go to' choices of genre.

6) The series centres around Charlie Spring, who is an openly gay teenager attending an all-boys grammar school and he begins to develop a 'friendship' with school rugby player, Nick Nelson.

7) This series is very typical of the genre, the cute romance with a side of awkwardness the audience will find comedic.

8) They all seem to have the same romantic theme with a happy ending with some sort of awkward main character.

9) Usually the main character has faced some sort of previous issues with love.

10) I would assume that others would have the same labels.

11) The two main characters slowly begin to see each other more and more often the closer they get.

12) Even though it is combined with other genres too I think that it has a lot of conventions but not too much that it is predictable.

13) Due to it being heavily based on LGBTQ+ this gives the rom-com genre a different edge.

14) I don't think that there are any other genres that would fit.

15) Heartstopper is known by their animated elements to their series. Especially these leaves that are used on title pages, posters, moments in the series and throughout the book.

Mode of address

1) This was definitely aimed at teens, possibly older teens though. The target audience can depend for this genre as it is based on whether the romance is more 'light-hearted' or not.

2) I would be considered an older teen and I enjoy this genre.

3) Possibly someone who is a part of the LGBTQ+ community or a fan of the author.

4) They might assume you are a teenager who is a part of the LGBTQ+ community.

5) Someone who enjoys reading books.

Relationship to other texts

1) It obviously references the book series throughout as this is what it is based off of.

2) I would say drama but I think this is a push as rom-com fits it perfectly.

3) Both have tension with a strong plot for the audience to follow along with.

4) Drama has more suspense and may even have a suspenseful ending but a rom-com doesn't have this at all and some are very predictable.
